Turquoise Sun ~ Hi, how is everyone? Summer has come with a vengeance to south central Virginia, where I live. It was soo hot today, it was almost like a steam bath and felt like 101 degrees. I know that summer has just started, but it almost makes me look forward to fall now. :) I wanted to paint another tree scene and just finished this one today. It's acrylics on 9 x 12 watercolor paper. I hope everyone has a creative and very fun weekend!

Oh!! Danielle!! I completely relate to this latest post!!
Though I've been so neglectful to Visual Salon and the wonderful artists it has brought together...I feel almost selfish if I do add a post that is about Me, MY Art, My self...Does anyone have this guilt?
For heaven's sake, it is a group, and we get to know each through the sharing of our artistic endeavors...
but I want to add something more...
Hmm. So, that's my goal this week.
To participate, as well as, SHARE, something artistically inclusive, in the community sense of this Blog.
One thing I do want to mention:
Kim's interview (with me) this past March has,( and still is),
been very beneficial to my "over-all" artistically oriented Internet presence.
SO: BIG thank you to Kim. I couldn't have done it without you.

Hello everyone,

Hum, I am sorry to have been silent for so long....
Things have been a bit crazy around here.
The demolition crew is coming at the end of the month and I am moving things and packing like a mad woman.
I have been unable to paint everyday at this time.
I should begin again in a couple of weeks while they are taking down part of the house.....
I want to go to sleep and wake up only when everything is finished :) LOL.

Playing with Light

Playing with Light ~ 'Tree of Lights' and 'Bridge of Lights' As long as I can remember, I've been fascinated with 'sparkly' objects such as prisms and crystals. I even have a collection of them hanging in the kitchen window where they reflect the sunlight and make little dancing rainbows. I guess that's why I've been experimenting lately with my acrylic paintings. I've been picking out little fake gemstones from old jewelry, using the reflective pearl acrylic paints and even using gloss medium to glue in crystal glitter in some paintings. It's lots of fun! The two paintings above are both 8 x 10 inches painted in acrylics on stretched canvas. On the tree I glued in some crystal glitter up in the leaf area and some tiny gemstones near the bottom, so it's all sparkly now! I had posted the tree a while back but always felt like I wanted to work on it some more. On the bridge I used an old strip of gemstones that I had taken off of a pair of old canvas flipflop sandals. I always knew I would use those in a painting someday!

I Need Advice

This weekend, I was able to get into my studio and do a bit of work. This is one of the pieces I am working on. I think it is just about done, unless anyone here has some thoughts for me. This will go into my Contemplation Series. It is 18 x 18 on deep, gallery wrapped canvas. The background has lots of layers of thin glazing. The image is on rice paper which I have painted, torn and woven together. I attached this weaving to another piece of thin rice paper, then onto the painted canvas. The three small squares are copper paint with drips of thin glazing over them. Some of what I like about this piece is the variety of textures and finishes.
This is what I need help with, though...should I somehow seal this? The woven rice paper is very textures and feels really nice. If I glaze over the painting with a watered down gloss medium, then I am going to loose some of that. Below is a close up of this part:

If I use matte medium, then I will loose the copper...and there is copper on the rice paper, too. If I leave it as is, do you think I am taking a HUGE risk with possible damage? What is your thought and do you have any advice for me on this one?

I also have asked on my blog for any ideas on a subtitle for this one. You would think I could do these things, wouldn't you? If you have any thoughts there, please leave me a comment for advice.

This one I added some glazing, as well. There is very little change with this, but I thought I would show you what I had done. I really like the little bit on the left where it appears what is contained in the frame is leaking out.

This is Contemplation 8 (Dreams) 18 x 18 Mixed Media on Deep, Gallery Wrapped Canvas. Basically, the rice paper bit was something which just happened and I liked how it was unfolding. So I worked with it a bit and this is how it all ended up.

Also in this one, there is a bit more green than is shown. I need to get some studio lights for my photo taking!

I wish you could see this a little clearer. I have tried and tried to get a better image. What appears blue actually has a little more green in it. There are some additional colors in the bits of rice paper attachments. The sweep and dots are inference gold. Now this music is mainly with German words...I do not speak German. The music sounds like skipping through the park or dancing with feathers. There is one song on the CD where this guy with a very deep voice says (doesn't sing) in English..."Mamma, Baby, Joe" over and over. It is a very odd song to my English ears, but it kind of stays with you.

So this is Music 3 (Feathers and Family) 12 x 24 Mixed Media on Deep, Gallery Wrapped Canvas.

It is a huge change from what I thought it was going to be... I started doing some glazing over the other one I showed you and liked the way it was working what I had there. You can still see the subtle line and shapes in this piece. Then the whole idea of feathers began to take shape along with the dancing of the first bit. So that is how it all began to change...the first painting is still there...just subtly.

Remember the Wind ~ I'm really happy with the way this one finally turned out. I had been working on it on and off the last week or so and sometimes I take a while to nitpick on one I'm painting. This is acrylics on a 9 x 12 inch piece of 140 lb. watercolor paper. I used the pearl iridescent paint on the swirls in the sky, blossoms and where the highlights in the grass is. I took two pictures of it with the light hitting it differently to show how the iridescent paint looks.

What is on your easel this Friday afternoon? The weather here in Washington, DC is awesome. I had not posted here recently, but it is not because I have not been thinking about everyone.

Here are two of the paintings I have been working on.

This I have been working on for about a week. It clearly needs more work, but it has been a busy week around here. It will be a part of my Contemplation Series.

This is the second painting I have been working on for the last several weeks. I think I probably will be finished when I add some glazing. It will be the third in my Music Series.

Remnants of the past

With reference to Kim's great "test" painting yesterday, I wanted to show you two little gloomy paintings I did more than 20 years ago. I'd like to share the past with you:). They are ugly but interesting. Tormented and clumsy. They make me smile and I shake my head right now looking at them.

The first one is 18 x 22cm (7.1 x 9.8"), acrylic paint, wire and wood from an old necklace, pieces of a watercolour painting and a ball pen drawing with a kind of nose-monster. The whole thing on a postcard glued upon cardboard.

This one is 16 x 20 cm (6.3 x 7.9"). It is acrylic paint and silk with silver pen on linnen-cardboard.
I can't remember now the exact circumstances in which I painted these, but I must have felt trapped...

Spring Trees

Pink Spring Trees ~ I was in the mood to paint the feeling of spring so all the trees are pink! :) They sort of remind me of cotton candy! The large one on the right is mostly finished but the others still need more work. We had an awful wind and rain storm last night and I thought it was going to blow in the kitchen windows a couple of times, yikes! The wind did pick up my heavy rocking chair, which I had wrapped in plastic, and turned it over and blew it clear across the deck! My cat Puddin' didn't like the sound of the wind whistling and 'wooooing'. She kept looking at the windows with the weirdest look on her face. I think March is coming in like a lion this year!

Sepia Dreams

I titled this 'Sepia Dreams' and posted in my blog too. This is acrylics on watercolor paper, 5 x 7 inches. I sketched the arch shape in on this one a couple of weeks ago in charcoal, then put it away without finishing it. The other night I was trying to get inspiration for another painting and grabbed this one and just started painting to see where it would go. The red oxide on top of the arch isn't this bright in the actual painting though. Do you ever just start painting/creating and let it go where it will without a real plan? It's a good creativity boost for me! I hope everyone has a really great weekend!

I transformed my tiny dining room into an art library.

It is an old fold-up desk which I never close :).

So my friends, this is what has been on my easel all weekend. It is the beginning of the second painting in my Music Series. I have a confession to make, though. I couldn't touch it yesterday. The first thing yesterday morning my sweet husband decided he was going to clean the kitchen cabinets (outside, not inside), but I was sensitive to the product he used and had an asthma attack. I haven't had one of those in quite a few months. Once I use the medication for that, there is no way I can paint. So this has been sitting there just waiting for me to move it forward! Today...I play catch up so I can get back to the studio as soon as possible!

Yesterday I began this painting.

I thought I would try to use mostly glazing to create it.

I continued working on it today, tomorrow I hope to finish it.

Although there are many problems with it I am staying positive and hope to solve them.

The darks appear darker on the screen.

Swamp's Roots

For me roots have a very special meaning... something like our souls, you know we are always attached to something or someone. This painting resembles that thought. It is in very vivid colors and its roots are deeply in to the ground.

I am recently into writing a lot of poetry based in that thought… about roots of our soul. Those special roots that we share with special people and of course with Art. I will share that poetry later with you all.

Belinda's post about her art's progression made me think about how my own creative progression has happened. I am sorry to say I do not have any of my early work...far too long ago and blueprints just do not photograph all that well. That tells you how old I am and how far back I go with all of this. However I did find some older ink drawings which at least give you an idea of basic work I was doing...you would never be able to see any of the details of the other works. Here we go...

So these didn't exactly load as I thought they would, and I can't seem to get them to move, either. Next time, I am sticking to the centered ones! But I think you get the idea of what I have done. Basically, I began with tremendous structure...literally drafting... and pen and ink work. I enjoyed playing with markers and colored pencils for many years, but had to keep most of my professional work basic ink drawings as they had to be reproduced [blueprints] and were working drawings [construction type details]. Then I began playing with pastels, although the large size kept giving me trouble and I kept thinking traditional. I would say the real break through piece for me was this woven piece done with watercolors. From this point, you have kind of seen my progression on my blog. I hope you have enjoyed this strange journey.

Blue Moon Series

Blue Moon Night and Twining Tree ~ I just painted this one but I think I'm going to do more to it before I call it finished. I've painted several in the blue moon series and really enjoy doing them...plus the twist on lid on my phthalo blue cracked the other day so I need to used up that blue anyways! This one is 11 x 14 on a stretched canvas and done in acrylics.

I don't know why I couldn't get the comment box to come up on your last post, but I wanted to say this. The one thing I know to be true is you have to be satisfied before a painting is right. Only you know what you have in your mind when you are creating a painting. Do let us know what you decide to do and how it is progressing. Also, sometimes it is just best to put it aside and come back to it. Most likely tonight when you are about to fall asleep, you will know just what it needs! Somehow when we relax our brains, they work the best. :)

I spent the whole weekend painting.
I came up with "Not Much...".
I was using the palette knife, to avoid details, which I tend to go for when I work too long on a painting.
Again, I used that fiery red; I don't seem to want to let it go...
It must mean something very deep in me!
Now, I have two paintings, unfinished and I am asking myself - Where do I go from here?

I'll post the first one in steps.
This is Step 1.

I think I need to apply some glaze - to darken the left, bottom part of the clouds areas - it looks too flat.
What do you think?

On My Easel

This weekend I have been working on this painting, but I need a new set of eyes... or several new sets :). My intention was for this to be the first painting in a new series I am calling "Music". The gestural mark I did while listening to a modern classical CD. The 3 pages are 3 pieces of rice paper (you already knew that, didn't you?). [30 x 40 deep gallery wrapped canvas acrylic and rice paper]

Here is my question, do you think it looks obscene? (Babs, did I spell that right?) If not, what else does it need? I hesitate to overwork it so am holding back!

I really appreciate your thoughts here. By-the-way, I had great fun with some other rice paper things this weekend. You will eventually get to see them, if not here at Creating Space.

I wanted to add this note (next day): This is a short article from Empty Easel about the kind of thing we are doing here. I thought you might like to read it. (I think I did that link thing right - eek)

Self Portraits

Every artists during her or his life time has always portraying herself or himself, some times unaware of the fact that she or he is doing it. I do not know the reason behind this process, but I do it all the time and it is very interesting to see how much the perception of you has change over the years. And the most amazing thing to see is how much you have been growing as artists, how much your style or way to work changed.

I place the entire self portraits that I have together to see this, and I was impressed of how much I have changed not only as a person, but as an artists. People always tell me that I portrait myself in every women I paint, but I never look at that possibility until today.

I want to share with you my growth as a woman and as an artist.

Hi Everyone.

My first post,,a 16x20 acrylic.

This was inspired by a Sunday drive last summer.

I've used a large amount of medium in the paint

in places in an attempt to achieve translucence.

Not sure if that shows up well here or not.

I'm excited about The Visual Salon, and look

forward to seeing everyone's work!

You all know I like to create tension in my art. This is one that is really wild. I am not sure it really works, but here I feel I can show good and bad. I would love to hear what your thoughts are on this. I will tell you how I did it. As you can see I did large brush strokes in purples, blues and reds. I then brushed in opposite direction with a pearl over the brush strokes. When all of that was dry, I mixed dark purple with self-leveling gel in gloss and poured it over one edge. After about 2 days, I did the same thing with the gel and white. It takes a lot of time for the gel to dry, but I just put it aside.
